Volunteers are streaming to the vibrant province of Krabi in southern Thailand, for a fun and educational Gap Year, Internship or Career Break.
‘With its spectacular scenery, diverse culture and fascinating history, it is no surprise that those interested in both devoting themselves to a worthwhile cause and broadening their horizons, are opting to come to inspirational Krabi,’ comments Ton Loriers, self-made Krabi businessman and owner of Krabi villas a Krabi Riviera Company. Channelling much of his own spare time into community activities, he is keen to highlight other philanthropic initiatives in the area. ‘We are proud that Projects Abroad Thailand, an organisation dedicated to providing much needed local support, have their Thai base here in Krabi’, he continues.
Projects Abroad Thailand is a highly respected volunteer organisation based in the popular tourist resort of Ao Nang in Krabi – they offer a wide range of vocational placements for those interested in spending a productive gap year, instructional summer internship or even a refreshing career break in the stunning province. Participants can choose from a broad selection of posts including Teaching, Care, Conservation & Environment, Nursing, Physical and Occupational Therapy. They are predominantly deployed within the Krabi area and provide much needed support to the local community, whilst benefiting from a respected training programme intended to improve their career prospects back home.
Volunteers not only learn a new profession, they enjoy daily contact with the famously friendly Krabi locals too. Whilst some are housed in shared accommodation near Ao Nang, many actually stay with a host family, which provides a unique insight into typical Thai life, with the added bonus of being able to sample some truly delicious and authentic, home-style cooking! Wherever they stay, volunteers tend to form a close bond with their Thai colleagues and develop a genuine sense of belonging within the Krabi community, something which most tourists rarely experience.
And, of course it’s not all work and no play for these generous souls – weekends off and free time is spent appreciating Krabi’s unspoilt, white sandy beaches, deserted tropical islands and verdant rain forests that are literally teeming with exotic wildlife. There is no shortage of sporting and leisure activities in Krabi either and those involved in Projects Abroad Thailand can take full advantage of having some of the world’s best scuba diving and rock climbing sites on their doorstep. Or, they can soak up the laid back Krabi nightlife predominantly centred in and around Ao Nang and Railay.
Volunteers often choose to round off their charitable stint with a well deserved holiday, usually dedicated to exploring the rest of Thailand. Krabi is well connected and flights from Krabi International Airport to Bangkok are cheap, frequent and take just over an hour. After exhausting the buzzing capital, many head for the northern province of Chiang Mai in search of spiritual adventure, whilst others prefer to relax on the delightful holiday island of Ko Samui. Some venture further afield and visit neighbouring countries such as Laos, Burma and Cambodia.
‘Countries like the UK are currently suffering high levels of unemployment, with young people in particular being impacted’ states Ton. ‘Projects Abroad Thailand is an opportunity for them to use their free time wisely. It enables them to see something of the world, learn valuable new skills and help the good people of Krabi in the process,’ he concludes.
